Retaining most of its political heavyweights from the city, the Congress released its list of 58 candidates for the Kochi Corporation elections, thus completing the line-up for the polls.

Soumini Jain, the chairperson of the works standing committee of the outgoing council and a Mayor probable of the UDF, leads the list. Ms. Jain will contest from the Elamkulam division, according to the list released by the District Congress Committee leadership.

N. Venugopal, chairman of the Greater Cochin Development Authority, and also a Corporation councillor; and B. Bhadra, the Deputy Mayor, had earlier opted out of the race. David Parambithara, the block president of Congress and a former councillor, will take on Usha Praveen, the daughter of former Chief Minster E.K. Nayanar and a Mayor probable of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) at Ravipuram division.

P.D. Martin will be the Congress candidate in Giri Nagar division, where Monamma Kokkad, another probable LDF candidate for Mayor, is seeking the mandate. The UDF has allotted the Gandhi Nagar division to its constituent Janata Dal (United), where Chandrika Sreedharan, its candidate, will contest against Poornima Narayan of the CPI(M).

K.J. Sohan, the town planning standing chairman of the outgoing regime and a former Mayor, will contest the Fort Kochi division against K.J. Antony of the CPI(M), whom he had trounced in the last election. The two had been in the Kochi Corporation council when Mr. Sohan was part of the LDF. Essy Joseph, the chairperson of the welfare standing committee, was not successful in getting a nomination this time as the Kerala Congress(M) decided to field John Master in Kadavanthra division, which she had represented earlier. Gracy Joseph, a sitting councillor, has been retained in the list.

Other prominent faces

The other prominent faces in the Congress list include former councillors T.J. Vinod, the chairman of the Development Standing Committee; A.B. Sabu, M. Premachandran, M.B Muraleedharan, Leno Jacob, K.V.P. Krishnakumar, V.R. Sudheer, Shyla Thadevouse, V.K. Minimol, and Gracy Joseph.

Releasing the list, the Congress leaders said no candidates would be projected for the position of Mayor as all women candidates stood equal chances. They also clarified that senior women leaders, including Padmaja Venugopal and Laly Vincent didn’t evince interest in contesting the election.
