With the State Assembly polls ahead, the Congress and the BJP, which were entangled in the aftermath of the imposition of President’s Rule in Uttarakhand, have now decided to kick-start their respective election campaigns in the State. The BJP has declared that it will take out rallies under a 'Pardafaash Abhiyan' against the Harish Rawat-led Congress government in Uttarakhand between August 15 and 26.

Uttarakhand BJP president Ajay Bhatt said, “Through the programme, we would be formally entering into the campaign mode for the upcoming elections.”

Over the rally, in each of the state’s Vidhan Sabha constituencies, the BJP will engage with voters over alleged scams under the Congress regime, and the failure of the Congress government in tackling pressing issues, including migration from the state and the lack of job opportunities for its youth.

About six teams would be formed and headed by former BJP chief ministers, including Major General (Retd) B.C. Khanduri, Bhagat Singh Koshiyari and Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank. Vijay Bahuguna, who served as chief minister of the hill state while he was with the Congress, and moved to BJP after being sidelined by it, would also head one of the teams for the campaign.

After the BJP's announcement, the Congress too has declared that it would celebrate the week starting from August 9 as the ‘August Kranti Saptaah’ to highlight the Congress' contribution to the country and the state.

According to Mr Bhatt, the programme was Congress’ “counter” to the BJP's 'Pardafaash Abhiyan'.

However, Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee vice-president Jot Singh Bisht said, “August 9 is always celebrated as ‘August Kranti Diwas’. The only difference is that this time Congress workers will be hosting seminars at the district level, where they will be speaking on the contributions of the RSS, the BJP and the Congress towards the country in pre- and post-Independence periods.”
