Rajasthan: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday targeted the BJP — though without naming it — for “misleading” people and urged the electors to compare the two parties before casting their votes.

Addressing a huge gathering here, she said the Opposition had been absent from Rajasthan for the past five years; now, it was making empty and baseless allegations against the government.

“When they come asking for votes, you should ask them where they were for the last five years? What did they do for you? I ask you to compare the work done by them with what we did... They just play politics of false promises and mislead people.”

“Did they ever provide free treatment to anyone? Did they ever care about anyone’s hunger? Did they ever feel the problems and pain of aam aadmi? Absolutely not,” she said.

Ms. Gandhi highlighted the flagship schemes of the Central and State governments.

The Centre had introduced the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, the Right to Information Act, the Food Security Act, the Right to Education Act, the Forest Rights Act and the Land Acquisition Act, she pointed out.

The Congress government in the State had introduced several schemes to ensure the social security of the poor, tribal people, farmers and women.

“Loans taken by farmers have been waived, and my sisters are being given a 30 per cent concession in public transport. Rajasthan, a backward State after independence, is leading in social security.”

“And all they [the Opposition] do is level false allegations against our leaders, discredit our schemes, spread rumours about them, make fun of them,” she said.

Ms. Gandhi was accompanied by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and AICC general secretary and Rajasthan election in charge Gurudas Kamat.
