09 Apr 16: Kerala Assembly Election: Both Congress and CPM have nightmares about BJP opening an account in the state - In Kerala, everybody is talking about the BJP's grand plan to "open the account" in the 140-seat state assembly. A national party's attempt to enter an assembly, where it has never won a single seat before, shouldn't really be a big deal in the normal course. But nobody said that Kerala's politics is taking the normal course in the run-up to the 16 May election. And while there is plenty of song and dance within the BJP about its account-opening, there is much moaning and fretting among the existing account-holders: the ruling Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and the rival CPM-led Left Democratic Front (LDF).

24 Feb 16: LDF seat-sharing talks after poll declaration - Opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) would begin formal discussions on seat-sharing only after the Assembly elections are declared.Top leaders of the CPI(M) and the CPI told that though LDF constituents have already begun organisational work with the elections in view, formal discussions on seat-sharing within the alliance and selection of candidates would begin only after the Election Commission announces the poll schedule, which they expect to happen by March 1 or a few days later.

An all-party meeting here on Thursday discussed the issue of extending online voting facility to the Kerala expatriates. Online voting has been a long-standing demand of the Kerala diaspora, which is around 2.3 million though it is yet to be seen how many would be on the voters' list.

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Monday said strict action would be taken against those trying to prevent government officials from discharging official duties.
"The entire episode was created by CPI legislator E.S. Bijimol to play petty politics. You (CPI) please ask your own party union staff members in the revenue department about this official (Idukki Additional District Magistrate Moncy P. Alexander)," Chandy said in the Kerala assembly.

23-Jun-15: CPI-M believes in violence: Chandy

The CPI-M believes in the politics of violence, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said. He was addressing a small group on Monday night ahead of the by-election in the Aruvikara assembly constituency on Saturday.
The election was necessitated after Congress leader and Speaker G. Karthikeyan died in March. His younger son, K.S. Sabarinathan, 31, quit a plum job and entered the fray.

23-Jun-15: Kerala local body elections in October
Thiruvananthapuram, The polls to the local bodies in Kerala will take place in October, a top election commission official said on Monday.
State Election Commissioner K. Sasidharan Nair told reporters here that at this point of time the exact date of polls could not be stated but the elections would be held in October.

Polls are scheduled to be held for 21,682 seats in the three-tier local body structure in the state and 50 percent of the seats are reserved for women candidates.

18-Jun-15: Aruvikara by-election: It's Chandy vs. Achuthanandan

With polling in the Aruvikara assembly by-election scheduled for June 27, it's more or less a battle between two political veterans of Kerala - 71-year-old Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and his predecessor, the 91-year-old communist leader V.S. Achuthanandan. The election was necessitated after senior Congress leader and assembly speaker G. Karthikeyan died in March.
It has now become a battle between the two because they themselves have decided to lead from the front - as they have been doing for the past 11 years, engaged in a one-to-one battle with the rest of the rival front's leaders lining up behind them.

3-Jun-15:Aruvikkara By Election 2015 - K Das, PCG’s candidate

Anti-Corruption Front led by former chief whip P C George MLA has announced K Das, former headmaster of Chala Vocational higher Secondary as their candidate in Aruvikkara. He was chosen as the candidate on the people’s referendum held in various panchayats of Aruvikkara.
“I am elated for having chosen me as the candidate of the front who is fighting against corruption. I hope the people of Aruvikkara will vote against corruption”, Das said.The Anti-Corruption Front consists of parties like Kerala Congress Secular, SDPI, and the DHRM.
2-Jun-15:BJP entry hots up Aruvikkara by-poll
The Aruvikkara by-election to the Kerala Assembly has acquired a new dimension with the BJP deciding to field 85-year-old O Rajagopal, the party’s best-ever electoral bet in Kerala, though he has so far lost all the elections he has fought.
Though the BJP has not made an official announcement, the party’s core committee took the decision as it was keen on fielding a strong candidate to take on the two rival fronts, the UDF and LDF.
By putting up Rajagopal, who was a Minister of State in the Vajpayee government, the BJP has made it very clear that it means business and that is not contended to be an also-ran as in the past by-elections.
Win or fail, it will be the best foot forward to the 2016 Assembly election at which the party promises to spring surprises and for which the Hindutva brigade has been making advance preparations ever since the Narendra Modi government came to power at the Centre.

1-Jun-15: BJP fields 85-year-old Rajagopal in Kerala assembly bypoll
Thiruvananthapuram, The BJP in Kerala, which is yet to open its account in the 140-member legislative assembly, on Sunday named 85-year-old former union minister O. Rajagopal as its candidate for the June 27 by-election for the Aruvikkara seat.
"The decision to field Rajagopal has been forwarded to the national leadership," the Bharatiya Janata Party's state president V. Muraleedharan told reporters here after a meeting of the party's top brass.
The by-election in the rural constituency in the capital district was necessitated following the death of assembly speaker G. Karthikeyan in March.

Thiruvananthapuram, On the eve of his government completing four years in office, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said he was confident the people would again repose confidence in the United Democratic Front (UDF) administration when assembly elections are held next year.
"There will be continuity in government and we are confident that we will return to power after the assembly polls that will be held next year. I have confidence in the people," said Chandy while interacting with media persons here on Sunday evening ahead of his government completing four years in office.
