Atal Bihari Vajpayee dies: The former Indian Prime Minister passed away on Thursday at the age of 93. Vajpayee breathed his last at the AIIMS where he was admitted on June 11 with multiple health issues.

New Delhi: One of India’s tallest leaders, former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee passed away on Thursday at the age of 93. Vajpayee breathed his last at 5:05 pm, the AIIMS announced in a statement. Vajpayee’s health condition had deteriorated on Wednesday and doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) had put him on life support system.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) veteran was admitted to the AIIMS on June 11 with multiple issues, including a kidney tract infection, urinary tract infection, low urine output and chest congestion.

The AIIMS had in a statement on Wednesday night described the former PM’s condition as critical. "Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been admitted for the last 9 weeks at AIIMS. Unfortunately, his condition has worsened over the last 24 hours. His condition is critical and he is on life support system,” the hospital had said. On Thursday, the hospital said the former PM's condition was same and that he continues to be on life support system.

Vajpayee had been on ventilator, as per doctors. The doctors attempted to take the former PM off ventilator on Wednesday to see how he reacts. However, his condition worsened and he was again put back on ventilator. From the family, his nephew, his daughter and her entire family were with Vajpayee on Wednesday night.
