As per World Bank’s 2010 research, one third of world’s poor reside in India. Though the number of poorest people of the world is highest in the biggest democracy many of its leaders belong to the crorepati club in terms of assets. Assam, the only state which is gearing up for the assembly election early this year is no exception. Let’s have a look at the top five richest political leaders of the state.

MANI KUMAR SUBBA: Total asset 306 crore: Mani Kumar Subba, a three-time Congress Lok Sabha member from Assam`s Tezpur Lok Sabha constituency, is the richest Member of Parliament in the entire north-eastern region. With an immovable asset of asset of 306 crore and movable asset of 60 crore declared in the affidavit Mani Kumar Subba is a well known Lottery baron. The Congress expelled the 56-year-old leader from the party after Subba decided to contest the Loksabha polls 2014, as an independent candidate against the party`s official nominee. Apart from serious cases against him, Subba’s Indian citizenship is also under the scanner after a petition was filed in 2005 in the Apex Court alleging that he was a Nepali citizen who had fled from there after a murder case was registered against him in the early 70s.

SIRAJUDDIN AJMAL: Total asset: 67 crore: Siraj Uddin Ajmal is the brother of Mumbai based perfume baron Badruddin Ajmal. He is a sitting member of Assam assembly. He is a Member of Parliament to the 16th Lok Sabha from Barpeta (Lok Sabha constituency), Assam. He won the Indian general election, 2014 being an All India United Democratic Front candidate and declared his total asset 67 crore in his affidavit.

 

 

 

 

 

Untitled-16BADRUDDIN AJMAL: Total asset: 43 crore: Meet Badruddin Ajmal, age 48, a director of the Mumbai-based Ajmal Group of companies that manufactures and exports agar oudh, India’s best attar, apart from textiles, readymade garments, essential oils, traditional garments and leather goods. Badruddin Ajmal’s party surfaced at a time in the year 2005 when the Congress had failed to stop the scrapping of the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunals) Act, which the Supreme Court struck down as ultra vires of the Constitution in July last year. An MP from Dhubri, the AIUDF supreme declared his assets as 43 crores in the election affidavit in 2014 MP parliamentary elections. These include various houses, agricultural non-agricultural land, property, cash and investments in the name of his wife Rizwana.

Untitled-14SUSHMITA DEV: Total 8 crore: Silchar: Sushmita Dev is an MP of the 16th Loksabha Constituency of Silchar of Barak valley in Assam. Daughter of Santosh Mohab Dev, a former cabinet Minister of Congress party and an MP, Sushmita Dev has a Master’s degree in Law from King’s College London. She declared her total asset as 8 crore which makes her the fourth richest politician of the state.

 

 

 

 

Untitled-15DIPEN PATHAK: Total asset: 5 crore: The only MLA from the Trinamool Congress in Assam Dipen Pathak who recently joined the Bhartiya Janata party also belongs to the crorepati club of Assam politicians. Dipen declared of having total assets of 6 crore in the affidavit of the assembly election, 2011.
