New Delhi: Criticising the Sheila Dikshit government for their inability to tackle rising prices, BJP national vice-president Smriti Irani on Wednesday questioned the government's capability to run the state, when they couldn't even regulate price of onions."

"It is under this government that the price of onions has risen by 300 per cent. Jo pyaaz ka niyatran nahi kar saki, woh sarkaar ka niyantran kya karegi," Irani asked, eliciting loud cheers from the audience.

Irani also accused the Congress party of disillusioning the voters with false promises". "In 2009, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had promised to curtail price rise within 100 days of his coming to power.

But that was all a lie. The truth is, the Prime Minister likes to talk, but only during elections. When the government couldn't deliver on their promises in Parliament, how can it claim to do anything now," she asked.

The actor-turned-politician was in the capital to campaign for the BJP ahead of the December 4 Assembly elections.

"The common man shouldn't have to cut corners when it comes to food. If the BJP is voted to power, we will reduce vegetable prices within 30 days, she said, while campaigning from New Delhi constituency, which is considered to be the stronghold of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

The rally also saw former state BJP chief Vijender Gupta criticising the Sheila Dikshit government on various issues such as price rise and corruption.

"The upcoming elections will set an example in the country. There is an enthusiasm amongst people — enthusiasm to vote and enthusiasm to bring about change. The December 4 elections will bring about that change," Gupta said.

Gupta, who is up against Dikshit and Aam Aadmi Party convener Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency, said he was confident of winning. "I am not worried. I am going to win. And I have no second thoughts about it."
