Legislative elections were held in Russia on 18 September 2016, having been brought forward from 4 December. At stake are the 450 seats in the State Duma of the 7th convocation, the lower house of the Federal Assembly of Russia. United Russia has been the ruling party since it won the 2011 elections with 49.32% of the vote, and took 238 seats (53%) of the seats in the State Duma.

Voter Turnout

Election officials said that as of 6 p.m. Moscow time, two hours before polling stations in the capital closed, turnout was 39.4 percent, substantially down on the 60 percent turnout at the last parliamentary election.

Opinion Polls

United Russia benefits from its association with 63-year-old Putin, who after 17 years in power as either president or prime minister, enjoys a personal approval rating of about 80 percent, opinion polls show.
Most voters do not see any viable alternative to Putin and his allies, and they fear a return to the chaos and instability of the 1990s, the period immediately after the collapse of the Soviet Union, if his rule ends.

After the United Kingdom European Union membership referendum in June 2016, Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister of Scotland, indicated that a second referendum on Scottish independence could be held.

{loadposition googlead}

A referendum on Scottish independence was previously held in September 2014, when 55% voted against the proposal. One of the reasons cited by those opposed to Scottish independence was that it would endanger Scotland being part of the European Union (EU).

Here are the main problems with a Scottish independence referendum:...KNOW MORE

  1. Westminster may not even allow it –First things first: Scotland may have its own parliament, but to hold a national referendum it still needs permission from Westminster in London
  2. Scotland's economy cannot handle independence – Another consideration is that Scotland might not even be able to afford to be independent right now — and Nicola Sturgeon almost certainly knows it.

The People's Party (PP) emerged as the largest party with the most seats at the election (137), but failed to secure an overall majority. The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) clung on to second place but fell to a new record low of 85, whereas Unidos Podemos, the alliance between Podemos and United Left (IU) remained at third place with 71 seats.

The PP increased its seat count by a surprising 14, capitalising on losses by PSOE and liberal Citizens (C's). Unidos Podemos' second placed projection failed to materialise at the polls, although they maintained the same number of seats as in the previous election
