Nearly 50 percent polling in Uttarakhand Assembly bypolls

Dehradun: About 50 per cent of the electorate on Monday exercised their franchise in the bypolls to Dharchula, Doiwala and Someshwar Assembly seats in Uttarakhand where a total of 19 candidates, including Chief Minister Harish Rawat, are in fray.

"Approximately 50 per cent of the nearly 3 lakh voters in the three constituencies cast their votes as polling was held peacefully amid adequate security arrangements at all the booths," Uttarakhand's Chief Election Officer Radha Raturi said here at the end of polling this evening.  The counting for the bypolls will be held on July 25, Raturi said.

Heavy rains hit bypoll voting in U’khand

Heavy rains dampened voters' enthusiasm early Monday morning as many of them stayed home and avoided casting their ballot for bypolls in the three constituencies of Doiwala, Dharchula and Someshwer in Uttarakhand. The bypoll in Dharchula is especially important for Congress as CM Harish Rawat is contesting from the seat and the low turnout caused both Congress and BJP workers to panic. According to the state election commission, polling was low early morning but after 3pm, voters turned up in larger numbers as the rain subsided and the turnout was recorded at 53% at the time of filing this report.

The three constituencies have 1,88,521 voters and as per conservative estimates, over a lakh of them voted in 311 polling booths in the three constituencies. "In the beginning, the low turnout made everyone a little anxious as it was raining in many places. The polling booths had small queues till 3pm and it was only in the last three hours that polling picked up," said Congress leader Surinder Kumar.

When asked about the voters' response in Dharchula, he asserted that the seat would be bagged by his party. At 3pm, 40% voting had been recorded in Dharchula and it swelled to 49% at the time of filing this report. Doiwala had recorded 42% and Someshwer had witnessed 44% turnout till 3 pm. The turnout picked up in the evening, and it was recorded at 53% at the time of filing this report.

By 6:30pm, poll strategists of both the parties had started culling out poll details in constituencies to figure out the trend. The BJP claimed to have got a record number of votes in Doiwala and Someshwer seats, while the Congress stuck to its claim that the CM would win the Dharchula seat by a large margin.
