Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi made two political statements at the BJP's rally in Jaipur on Tuesday. One, he is immensely popular in Rajasthan as he attracted the biggest-ever crowd of enthusiasts.

Second, he said, Congress was giving India new alphabets - A for Adarsh Ghotala, B for Bofors Scam or Beta ke karname; C for Commonwealth Scam and D for Defence Corruption...and Damad ka Karobar. As the audience lapped it up, cheering and clapping to making it an instant hit, Modi paused and repeated the dialogue about D for Damad and then, all four again.

Response to his rally was double the previous rally in Jaipur that Atal Bihari Vajpayee as Prime Minister addressed to launch Vasundhara Raje as the leader of state BJP and the future chief minister in 2003. The venue fell short as two lakh people reached there. Many more were held up as traffic was brought to a halt at many places because of vehicles for rally and sea of pedestrians who walked on roads.

Modi has come to push Raje's stake for the chief minister's post a second time, after she missed it narrowly in 2008. That it was Modi for Raje at her rally was kept in designing the backdrop on the stage where Raje's photo was in the front and Modi's behind her. Vajpayee's audience was by and large calm, mature and disciplined who listened to him in rapt attention.

Modi's was mostly of lower-middle class youth and the middle-aged.  No, there were not many rural or old faces. And not many wore traditional Rajasthani turbans. The popular slogans were: "Modi...Modi...Modi...", "Modi PM, Vasundhara CM."

Modi was forced to stand before the mike before his turn to bring the slogan-shouting crowd that was on its feet to take a look at him under control before he returned to his seat. Modi, while delivering his speech, kept quiet with folded hands urging them to be patient and stop interrupting his speech with slogans. There were a few thousand Muslims but very few were in skull caps or burqas or scarves which many Muslims in Rajasthan don't wear.

BJP had a target to bring a minimum of 25,000 Muslims. It fell short. Muslims who came were mostly supporters of leaders seeking a ticket from the minority seats. Modi evoked Governor Margaret Alva to run down Ashok Gehlot.

He cited her statement that Jaipur-Delhi highway, once an example of good roads, was so bad now that it should be avoided to travel. Modi wondered why Prime Minister Manmohan Singh did not reveal anything about what he did at the G20 Summit in St Petersburg.

Neither he nor Raje named Ashok Gehlot, the chief minister of Rajasthan, even once. Modi said any Congress government spent the first year in power in harassing opponents, the next three years in amassing wealth through corruption and the last year in distributing freebies. This was aimed at Gehlot.

Raje spoke about unsafe women, corruption in the free distribution of medicines, lack of doctors in most hospitals and poor power supply. The rally marked end of Raje's 'Suraj Sankalp Yatra' which was concluded in August.

This rally with Modi as star attraction was scheduled in September to keep the momentum alive till the elections less than three months away. Response to rally proved that Raje was capable of mobilising party workers for such massive shows. It seems Modi reserved a big political statement of national importance for the day he is declared the BJP's prime ministerial candidate.
