BJP welcomes poll announcement in Haryana, Maharashtra; aims 2/3rd majority

BJP campaignNew Delhi: Welcoming the announcement of Assembly elections in Haryana and Maharashtra, BJP on Friday said people of the two states are yearning for a change due to the Congress' "misrule and loot" and exuded confidence of getting two-third majority.

"BJP welcomes the announcement by Election Commission to hold elections in Maharashtra and Haryana on October 15. We are sure of a change of power in both the states, where people are ready for a 'parivartan' (change) due to the Congress misrule and loot.

"People will vote against corruption by Congress and in favour of development promised by BJP. We are confident of getting two-thirds majority in both Haryana and Maharashtra," Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar told reporters.

Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters, the Minister said the party was hoping of forming a government in both the states as people were angry and fed up with Congress regimes in both states and want a change.

He said the party would soon declare its candidates in both the states and as the time was short they would be decided within the next week.

Javadekar said there had been rule of "loot" by Congress- NCP regime for the last 15 years in Maharashtra, and Congress alone has ruled Haryana for last 10 years during which various scams have come out and people were fed up with them and want to oust them from power.

The senior BJP leader expressed hope that the positive agenda of development by BJP would be accepted by the people of these two states and their government will come to power. He said the issue of seat-sharing with its ally Shiv Sena will be sorted out within a week and the party is going alone in Haryana. On who will be the party's Chief Ministerial candidate in Maharashtra, he said there is no such tradition in Maharashtra as no party has declared its CM candidate ahead of polls.

In Maharashtra, two regional political outfits, Swabhimani Paksha and Rashtriya Samaj Paksha have joined the NDA and the coalition of five parties is termed as 'Mahayuti' comprising BJP, Shiv Sena, Republican Party of India and the two above. In 2009, BJP contested on 119 seats in Maharashtra's 288- member assembly and Shiv Sena on 167.

After its improved performance of 23 seats in Lok Sabha polls, BJP is demanding a bigger share of seats in the state assembly and is adamant on a 50-50 seat sharing with Shiv Sena. Shiv Sena that won 18 Lok Sabha seats is not ready to give in and is asking for the same seat-sharing to continue.
