BJP president Amit Shah to monitor Maharashtra elections

BJP national president Amit Shah has drawn up a plan to wrest the Maharashtra legislative assembly from the Congress-NCP combine, it is learnt. According to Shah's plan, ministers from Gujarat and MP will be in charge of each Maharashtra assembly constituency that the party will contest. Ministers will begin touring Maharashtra in August.

They will work in close collaboration with state BJP leaders and brief Shah, a source said on Monday after Shah held talks with Maharashtra leaders in New Delhi. Devendra Phadnavis, Vinod Tawde, Sudhir Mungantiwar, Atul Bhatkhalkar, Ravindra Bhusari and Pankaja Munde, among others, were present at the meeting, their first with Shah after he became BJP president.

This is a clear indication that Shah will personally supervise the Maharashtra polls, say observers. The Shiv Sena, meanwhile, has lost no time. Last week, Matoshree deputed Sanjay Raut and Anil Desai to call on Shah after he took over as BJP's national president.

But while stating that the BJP valued Sena as a trusted ally in Maharashtra, Shah said there should be no compromise on the party's "self-respect", it is learnt. The polls are scheduled for October. Accordingly, plans are afoot to hold division-wise conclaves in western Maharashtra, Marathwada, Konkan, Vidarbha and northern Maharashtra. Shah will call on RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat in Nagpur later this week, a source said.
