Ram Vilas Paswan keeps Congress, BJP guessing; says his options are open

LJPRamWith Lok Sabha elections approaching, the hunt for allies is in full force. In the first big tie-up ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) have entered into an alliance in Bihar.

LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan will contest in 8 seats in Bihar. He will be meeting BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Thursday.
Paswan will be announcing his re-entry into the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Wednesday.

The decision to ally with the BJP comes after the party held its parliamentary board meeting earlier on Wednesday. The tie-up is being seen as a huge boost for Modi as Paswan was the first person to quit the NDA cabinet after the Gujarat riots in 2002.

Paswan's return to the NDA could give the BJP more electoral muscle in Bihar. It could also be a blow to RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and the Congress's attempt to forge a grand anti-BJP alliance in Bihar. It may also encourage other fence-sitters to edge closer to the BJP and the NDA.

The other big alliance on the cards is between the Congress and the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) in the newly created state. The final details are still being ironed out.
