Polling for Asansol and Bidhan Nagar Municipal Corporations began this morning by and large on a peaceful note barring one stray incident of bomb throwing in Asansol's Jamuria area.The results will be announced on October 16.

Voter turnout till 5 pm in Bidhanngar and Asansol was 71 per cent.

Polling percentage till 12 noon

Bidhannagar: 36%

Bally: 26%

Siliguri: 32%

Asansol: 29%

13:25 PM: Media attacked at Bidhannagar. Cameraperson and reporters of regional channels seriously attacked.

Trinamool Congress leader Baiju Thakur shot at Asansol. Doctors say he is seriously injured.

13:18 PM:CPM’s candidate of ward 33 of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation was allegedly attacked by Trinamool Congress supporters. Her house also attacked by them.

11:20 AM: In 21 ward of Rajarhat, a mob of 20 outsiders allegedly barged into the polling booth and started casting fake votes. Immediately, voters raised a voice and the outsiders ended up breaking the EVM. Meanwhile, voting has been suspended. 

10:20 AM: A massive showdown took place between police and voters at ward 106 ward of Jamuria. While police resorted to a lathicharge to disperse agitators, they brick batted in return.

In 28 no ward of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, opposition parties accused Trinamool Congress of booth capturing.

State Election Commission sources said polling began peacefully with large queues seen outside the booths in both civic corporations in North 24 Parganas and Burdwan districts of West Bengal.

Amid reports of violence and alleged malpractices, polling for the two newly formed municipal corporations and Siliguri Mahkuma Parishad across West Bengal registered 18 per cent voter turnout in the first three hours today.

"We have received reports of booth capturing and violence mainly from Bidhannagar and Asansol. We are taking stock of the situation and have taken necessary measures," State Election Commissioner S R Upadhaya

The Asansol Municipal Corporation was formed by merging Raniganj, Jamuria and Kulti municipalities while the Bidhannagar corporation was constituted by merging Bidhan Nagar and Rajarhat-Gopalpur municipalities. TMC is expected to win but has been riddled with factional fight which may upset its equation. 

Elections are also being held for Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad in north Bengal, which consists of areas of the Terai region. The polls there will be a five cornered contest between CPI(M), TMC, BJP, Congress and GJM in some wards

The campaign for the election to the Asansol Municipal Corporation (106 wards) and Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (41) ended on October 1 afternoon marked by rancour.

The results will be announced on October 07.
