Even before the citizens cast their vote for the panchayat elections in Haryana, as many as 95 sarpanches have been elected unanimously in the first phase of the three-phase polls in the state. Also, according to the data compiled by the Haryana state election commission on Monday, the number of panches elected unanimously stands at 15,697.

Elections on Januray 10

State election commissioner Rajeev Sharma told HT that in all there were 2,583 posts of sarpanches, of which 95 had been elected unanimously. Bhiwani had maximum number of sarpanch seats (192), on which only two persons had been elected unanimously.

The maximum sarpanches elected unanimously are from Kurukshetra district (15), where there are 168 seats of sarpanch. Kurukshetra is followed by Kaithal district in which sarpanches have been elected unanimously on 12 of the 132 seats.

Sharma said in all there were 26,248 wards for the post of panch in the 21 districts of the state, for which a total of 20,993 persons had filed nominations. Bhiwani had maximum wards, 2,101, where the maximum number of persons — 1,388 — had been elected unanimously.

Talking about panchayat samitis, Sharma said there were total 1,221 wards in the state, of which 46 members had been elected unanimously. Sonepat and Kaithal gave maximum number of five members each that had been elected unanimously. Sharma said that of the total 416 posts of zila parishad member, only two had been elected unanimously, one each in Mewat and Panipat districts.
