Goa Panchayat Election Voting Live 11 June

  1. Panchayats of Taleigao, Casarwarnem, Allorna, Chandel-Hassapur, Harvale have been excluded from the list of panchayats going for elections. A total of 1,522 wards across 186 panchayats will go for elections on June 11, while counting is scheduled for June 13.
  2.     BJP, Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and Goa Vikas Party (GVP) will make an alliance and fight for the upcoming Zilla Panchayat polls in the coastal state
  3.     “May 21 is a Sunday, so there won’t be any problem for the working class people to exercise their votes. They will not have to take leave exclusively for this purpose,” said one SEC official explaining the contents of the affidavit.
  4.     Scrutiny of the nominations will be held on May 26 and 27 while withdrawals, if any, can be done on May 29. The five-year term of the panchayats ends on May 26.
  5.     The notification, issued by State Election Commissioner RK Srivastava, says that the nomination for the polls would be accepted from May 18 to May 25, except May 21 being Sunday, at the concerned Returning Office at the taluka level.

  6.     On the other hand, the State government earlier decided to hold elections on June 25 but it advanced the same to June 17, after a review this week. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar cited various reasons for the delay in holding elections.

Goa Panchayat Election 2017 Details

There are now less than two months before the village panchayat elections are due to be held in Goa. The State Election Commission has suggested May 21 as the tentative date for the village body polls so that the process is completed before the end of May and the new panchayats can be in place before the monsoon begins. The government is yet to clear the date for the polls. But, even as the Department of Panchayats is now going through the delimitation of wards process, there is speculation that the polls may be postponed by up to six months as the ruling dispensation is not keen on the local body polls at this point of time, and that it would prefer to have the polls after the by-elections to the Legislative Assembly.

In India’s federal system, the panchayats play a major role at the village level governance, so a government not prepared for, or not in favour of, panchayat polls at a particular point of time should not be a reason for the elections to be postponed. The village panchayats are constitutional entities with a fixed term of five years and the current term of the panchayats ends in May. Quite simply, logically and legally the polls should be held before the end of the term. Governments should not be allowed to tinker with the term of these constitutional village bodies, for reasons that are not substantially valid.
