Thirty Delhi Metro trains turn campaign vehicle for AAP, BJP

As the Assembly elections close in, the campaigning heat can be felt  on the Delhi Metro. Posters of the AAP and the BJP can be seen all over the coaches, on station walls and outside the premises.

In fact, the AAP and the BJP have reportedly been allotted 30 trains each to put up their panels. The Congress, however, has not yet approached the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for advertising space.

According to Metro officials,  the DMRC rules state that political advertisements can only be put up inside  trains. The advertisement space inside  and outside station premises is usually  reserved for commercial purposes.

“According to policy, only 15 per cent of the ad space can be given to political parties. Accordingly, we have allotted 30 trains each to both parties. I cannot comment on the exact number of panels, but both parties have nearly the same number. Nobody from Congress approached us,” a DMRC official said.

Faheem Khan, who handles advertising for the AAP, said the party had chosen to campaign through the Metro to reach out to more people. “The Delhi Metro is used by people from all sections of society. We felt this would give us better reach,” Khan said.

The Congress said they hadn’t taken a decision on the matter yet.

“We have no immediate plans to use the Metro for campaigning. We will take a decision once all candidates have finished filing nominations,” Haroon Yusuf, the head of the party’s publicity committee, said.

The posters and panels have been put up on the the Yellow Line and the Blue Line.
Interestingly, most people commuting on these lines are students and IT professionals working in companies located in Gurgaon, Noida and Nehru Place.
