Election Commission Says, Delhi assembly elections likely in February-end

delhi election will be held in february endAfter Jammu and Jharkhand Elections over, the Election Commission will soon announce polls in Delhi, which are likely to be held sometime in the later weeks of February before the exam season sets in.

Officials have indicated that the poll schedule will be announced latest by the second week of February. "Currently, the summary revision of electoral rolls is going on. EC sources said they were waiting for the final publication of the electoral rolls for Delhi before making an announcement for the polls. The electoral rolls updated till December 31, 2014 will be published on January 5.

Another indication of the urgency of the poll commission to notify and thereafter hold elections for the Delhi assembly is the fact that the EC, according to sources, has also started moving electronic voting machines (EVMs) from Haryana to Delhi.  "We need about 12,000 electronic voting machines to conduct elections in the Capital. We are moving about 15,000 machines as a matter of precautions," said the Election Commission official.

The election commission had taken adequate steps to ensure that names of all eligible voters in the Capital are in the electoral rolls for the polling exercise. A special drive was conducted across Delhi for the enrolment of voters.

"After the rolls are published, a review meeting will take place and a decision on holding polls in the national Capital will be taken," a senior EC functionary said. "There are number of issues under consideration, including the beginning of school examinations and availability of teachers for conducting the polls."

The EC has discussed the poll preparation with Delhi Police, Union home ministry officials and Delhi government officials who have told the commission that all necessary preparations for conducting the polls had been done.

Delhi's Chief Electoral Officer told the commission that the requisite number of electronic voting machines had been procured and the returning officers for each assembly constituency had been designated.

The EC has to conduct the polls in Delhi within six months of the dissolution of the Delhi assembly. The house was dissolved in the first week of November. Though there is time left for the deadline to expire, the commission is eager to conduct the polls in the Capital as early as possible.

President's rule was imposed in Delhi after the resignation of 49-day-old Arvind Kejriwal's AAP government in February last year. The party had been running the government with outside support from the Congress.
