Delhi poll notification likely this weekend, voting in Feb

The notification of Delhi Assembly elections may be made around December 20, paving the way for possible voting on February 7, political and official sources said.

Sources in political parties and the Delhi administration confirmed that the Election Commission may pick December 20, when polling is due to wind up in Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand, as the day for the much-awaited announcement.

Some discussions have been held, and by this weekend, the picture will get clear,” said a top official in Delhi administration who attended election security related meetings in the Union Home Ministry.

BJP sources also confirmed the likely announcement by the weekend of the poll schedule for the 70 Assembly constituency in the capital, which is under the President’s Rule till February 14, 2015.

The capital was placed under the President’s Rule after the Arvind Kejriwal-led government of the Aam Aadmi Party resigned in February after 49 days in office.

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Delhi Vijay Dev said all systems are in place as elections can be held whenever the Election Commission announces the dates.

Dev confirmed that he was soon likely to move to Chandigarh as the advisor to the Union Territory administrator after a recent transfer order but that may  not hinder the electoral process.

It is not about an individual but the general preparedness,” said Dev. There is a high probability that K K Sharma, a 1983-batch IAS officer, whom Dev is likely to replace in Chandigarh, may be given the CEO’s charge, said a BJP leader.

  • BJP leader and former legislator Nand Kishore Garg said: “The elections will be announced in a few days as these have to be held in the first week of February.”

  • The polls have to be held before February 14 — the completion of the one year of the President’s Rule,” he said.

According to the Delhi Election Office, the summary revision of electoral rolls will be completed by January 5, 2015. There are about 1.30 crore voters in the city today as compared to 1.19 crore voters in the December 2013 Assembly polls.

In the last Assembly elections, the BJP emerged as the single largest party in the House with the support of 32 MLAs, the Aam Aadmi Party won 28 seats, the Congress got eight seats and there were two others.
