BJP asks all MPs to pitch in for Delhi elections

NEW DELHI:  BJP has deputed its 300-odd MPs from both Houses of Parliament to campaign for the assembly polls in Delhi, which is likely to be held in February. BJP president Amit Shah told the MPs at the parliamentary party meeting on Tuesday that they would have to address around 2,000 poll meetings in the Delhi between December 1 and 23. The instructions to the MPs are to take time off for six days each to address rallies across Delhi while they are here for the winter session of Parliament.

With AAP's strong presence here, the BJP central leadership still considers the assembly polls a tough call and has decided to pull out all its ammunition as "victory is important". It emerged as the single largest party in the 2013 elections in Delhi but fell short of the majority mark. Also Read: Delhi  candidate List,  Delhi Election Schedule Delhi Opinion poll

As the MPs are expected to attend House proceedings during the day, they have been asked to campaign between 6 and 10pm. While around 225 MPs have already given in their schedule for election meetings, all of them have been given a deadline for Wednesday to make themselves available for the rallies. Minister of state for parliamentary affairs Rajiv Pratap Rudy and his colleague M A Naqvi will co-ordinate with the MPs.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajiv Pratap Rudy said that BJP MPs would be briefed on the campaign issues in the next three days at separate meetings for first-timers and seniors parliamentarians. " Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the party MPs that the birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee would be observed as national 'Good Governance Day' on December 25, where all BJP MPs and government officials will make the day symbolic of good governance," Rudy told reporters.

Earlier parliamentary affairs minister M Venkaiah Naidu congratulated the PM for his "successful" foreign visits to SAARC and Australia where he attended the G-20 Summit as party MPs felicitated Modi. External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj stated that she would make a statement on the Prime Minister's successful foreign visits in Parliament on Wednesday.

Amit Shah asked party MPs to step up efforts for BJP's membership drive as it had crossed the 1.1 crore mark so far and informed that the target is to reach 10 crore from the current 4 crore members.
