Delhi poll: Voters divided over fresh polls, Arvind Kejriwal still a favourite

Kejriwal 2

Nearly half of Delhi's voters (47 per cent) favour fresh elections in the national capital while 42 per cent of the electorate want the BJP to form the government as suggested by Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung, according to a Mood of Delhi poll conducted by India Today.

In what could be bad news for the Aam Aadmi Party, an overwhelming 56 per cent of Delhi's voters did not want Jung to invite the Arvind Kejriwal-led party to form the next government. The AAP has repeatedly accused Jung of batting for the BJP.

The opinion poll also found that if elections are held again in the national capital, half of the respondents (50 per cent) said they will vote for the BJP. The AAP, with 41 per cent votes, was a close second choice. A beleaguered Congress, with just 4 per cent respondents saying yes to it, faces the prospect of a severe drubbing if polls are held now.

Who should be the next chief minister of Delhi?

In the opinion poll conducted with over 1000 respondents amid a bitter row over the formation of the next government in the national capital, it was also found that more people wanted Arvind Kejriwal to return as the chief minister of Delhi than his rivals in the BJP or Congress.

Kejriwal's personal popularity in Delhi, the poll suggests, remains higher than his competitors at 39 per cent, despite his Aam Aadmi Party facing a backlash over quitting the government after barely 49 days in power earlier this year.

The surprise choice for Delhi CM in the India Today poll is former cop-turned-activist Kiran Bedi, who has managed as many votes (20 per cent) as the BJP heavyweight Harsh Vardhan. A former colleague of Kejriwal during their anti-corruption movement, Bedi is currently not affiliated to any political party but has leaned towards the BJP. Three-time Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, with just four per cent votes, further reflects the dismal picture of her party in the national capital.
