rajya-sabha 350 083112011625New Delhi: On a day when anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare’s fast for Lokpal Bill entered third day, reports emerged that the UPA government might table the Lokpal Bill in the Rajya Sabha on Friday.

Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said the select committee has given a notice to the Rajya Sabha Chairman to take up the Lokpal Bill immediately.

"The select committee, headed by Minister of State in Prime Minister Office (PMO) V Narayanasamy, has already sent a notice that the Bill be immediately taken up in the Rajya Sabha," Shinde told reporters here.

He added, "The Lokpal Bill has been passed from the Lok Sabha and has gone to the Rajya Sabha. The select committee in the Rajya Sabha had recommended 13 amendments to the Bill and that were also considered by the government."

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath earlier Thursday said, "Our priority is to pass the Lokpal Bill."

The development came amid clarification by Kamal Nath that the government was not planning to curtail the Winter Session of Parliament.

"At the moment all the speculations and the media reports are not true. There is no plan at the moment to curtail the session," Kamal Nath told reporters outside Parliament.

There were media reports on Wednesday that Parliament may be forced to adjourn sine die ahead of schedule due to the continued disruptions.

He further said that "our priority is to pass the Lokpal Bill. The Lokpal Bill has to be taken in Rajya Sabha, then it will come to Lok Sabha."

Union Minister V Narayanasamy had yesterday said that the government has taken all possible steps and intends to pass the Lokpal Bill as early as possible but opposition parties have not been allowing Parliament to function

"Opposition parties are not allowing the House to function. Therefore, as soon as the House comes to order, the government will take Lokpal Bill on a priority for discussion and voting. Therefore from the government side, we have done everything, we are ready to pass the Bill as early as possible," Narayanasamy said.

"In the Lok Sabha, it was passed. As far as the Rajya Sabha is concerned, it went to the select committee of the Rajya Sabha. Select committee gave thirteen recommendations which have been accepted by the government. The Cabinet approved and then I requested the chairman of the Rajya Sabha to take up the Bill for discussion. It is pending in the Rajya Sabha," he said.
