EC forwards views on opinion polls to Centre, majority favour ban

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has sent a compilation of views of various political parties on opinion polls to the Central Government. The Commission refers to its previous view of banning opinion polls in 2004 and how it was a unanimous view that publishing the results of opinion polls should be prohibited from the date of notification of elections. Five national parties and 10 state parties had sent their response to the ECI.

The Congress has supported a ban on opinion polls. The BJP does not endorse the proposal to impose any restriction on the conduct of or dissemination of the results of opinion polls. The BSP supports the proposal to prohibit opinion polls during elections. The CPI (M) also supports the proposal to prohibit the results of opinion polls during a reasonable period before the date of polls and till half an hour after the conclusion of poll in all constituencies. Sharad Pawar led NCP has also favoured a ban on Opinion.

The Congress's stand led to a war of words between the main opposition BJP and the ruling party at the Centre. The media has strongly criticised the proposal to ban opinion polls.
