Delhi Election Commission to encourage voters with help of Lord Ram.

Come Dussehra, you may witness Lord Ram and his wife Sita persuading people to vote in the upcoming Delhi elections. The Delhi Election Commission has decided to bank on the popularity of the traditional Ram Leela shows for reaching out to voters in poll year.

The idea was conceived by the state Election Commission keeping in mind the Delhi Assembly elections scheduled in December.

"Ram Leela events are popular and people are attached with the characters such as Ram and Sita. If the character of Ram encourages people for voting, then it is going to create impact among the masses," Chief Electoral Officer, Delhi, Vijay Dev said.

After preparing a list of Ram Leela organisers in the city, the state election commission will fix a meeting with them in this regard.

The poll body has also decided to rope in a celebrity, possibly from Bollywood or the sports fraternity, for the campaign, officials said. "The idea is to encourage voters, particularly the youth and women, who generally do not participate in the elections. So, we will choose the celebrity whom youth and woman can identify themselves with," another poll official said.At the same time, the state Election Commission has issued orders for the mass transfers of government officers, as part of its transparency measures in the run up to the Delhi elections.Police officers right from the rank of joint commissioner to

subinspector level will see transfers if they are posted for more than three years in a particular district. Same is the case with administrative officers including additional district magistrates, deputy collectors, sub-divisional magistrates, tehsildars and block development officers.

The Delhi Election Commission has sent a request to the office of the state Chief Secretary and to the police headquarters for detailed review of tenure of all the officers selected for electoral duty.

Any officer against whom the Commission has recommended disciplinary action or charged for lapse in duty will not be assigned electoral duties, Dev said.
