RAIPUR: As deadline for nominations for the first phase of elections in Chhattisgarh ended on Friday, 242 candidates, including chief minister, Raman Singh, filed their papers for 18 constituencies that go to polls on November 11. The applications will be scrutinised today and the last day for withdrawals is Monday.

The day saw a heavy rush for nominations with as many as 111 applications being filed for the first phase of polling. Besides, six candidates including Bhupesh Baghel from Congress (Patan) filed their nominations for the second phase of elections scheduled on November 19.

The first phase of polling includes 12 assembly segments of Bastar comprising Konta, Bijapur, Dantewara, Jagdalpur, Bastar, Chitrakoot, Narayanpur, Kondagaon, Kanker, Bhanupratappur, Antagarh and six seats of Rajnandgaon- Rajanandgaon, Dongargarh, Khujji, Manpur-Mohala, Dongargaon and Khairagarh.

While chief minister's constituency, Rajnandgaon, tops the list of nominations with 27 candidates filing their papers, constituencies of Bijapur, Antagarh and Kondagaon are at the bottom with 8 nominations each. However, the battle lines are already drawn here, as Congress has fielded Alka Mudliyar, widow of slain leader, Udai Mudliyar, to take on Dr Raman Singh.

Besides the chief minister, three other ministers, Lata Usendi (Kondagaon (ST)), Kedar Kashyap (Narainpur (ST)) and Vikram Usendi (Antagarh (ST)) would be in fray in the first phase. The stakes are very high for BJP on these 18 seats, as it had won 15 of them in the last polls. BJP had lost the seat of Mohla-Manpur, Konta and Khujji, where it has fielded fresh candidates this time.
