RAIPUR: In a major tribute to the Congress leaders killed in May 25 Maoist ambush in Bastar, opposition Congress on Friday nominated their kith and kin to contest the next month's assembly polls in Chhattisgarh as it released its first list of 17 out of 90 candidates.

Though the Congress was supposed to release the list of 18 candidates from the constituencies that goes to polls, the party sought to pay eloquent tributes to its slain PCC chief Nandkumar Patel by nominating his son Umesh Patel to contest from Kharasia, where polling is scheduled in the second phase of polls in November 19.

Umesh Patel's name figures on the top of the list of 17 candidates, released Madhusudhan Mistry, AICC general secretary in charge of Congress central election committee.

Nandkumar Patel and his elder son Dinesh were killed in the May 25 Maoist attack that had eliminated other frontline leaders of the Congress, including former union minister Vidya Charan Shukla, senior tribal leader Mahendra Karma and former legislator Uday Mudaliyar besides 30 other partymen and security personnel.

Another slain leader Mahendra Karma's wife Devti Karma will contest from the her husband's traditional Dantewada seat while the Congress choose to play the "martyrdom card" from chief minister's constituency of Rajnandgaon where it fielded late legislator Uday Mudaliyar's wife Alka Mudaliyar to take on the BJP's heavy weight on his home turf.

In the first list for 17 constituencies, Congress denied ticket to Shivraj Usare from Mohala-Manpur (ST) constituency in Rajnandgaon district and nominated Tez Kunwar Netam to make efforts to retain the seat for the party. The decision on the candidate from Khujji, a sitting seat of the Congress being represented by Bholaram Sahu, has been kept pending while no decision has been taken so far on the candidate from Dongergarh, which also goes to polls in the first phase.

The opposition Party has re-nominated four candidates, who had lost the 2008 polls by a slender margin, to test their electoral fortunes this time.

Congress has re-nominated its lone sitting legislator from Bastar Kawasi Lakma-who had survived the Bastar attack on May 25 Maoist massacre-to contest from the same Konta (ST), a constituency where the Maoist rebels have tremendous clout.

The first Congress list of candidates for the first phase of polls is being described as 'balanced' and in general various warring factions have welcomed it saying "Congress have won the first battle for Bastar". It is being felt that former chief minister Ajit Jogi's camp had got a lion share in distribution of tickets and party men at the grassroots level got opportunity come up.
