Election 2015: Congress debates choice of ally for Bihar polls

Bihar Election 2015The Congress is debating who, between the JD(U) and RJD, would be a more dependable ally in Bihar, while indicating that it will not go alone even if the anti-BJP front splits in the crucial electoral battle ahead.

“Lalu Yadav is the dependable ally. He has never ditched us at the national level. He cannot have a secret pact with Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” claimed a CWC member while indicating that the RJD chief has good equations with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi. Besides, Mr Lalu Yadav has a strong vote bank of Muslims and Yadavs. But the upper castes don’t like him. Among the OBCs, non-Yadavs may not like him as well, felt the CWC member.

The RJD chief is trying to win over former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi despite knowing well that the latter is working for the victory of the BJP, and he would do this not by joining the BJP-led NDA, but by fielding candidates against the JD(U).

The Bihar Congress has already conveyed to Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi that a pre-poll alliance with the JD(U) would help in the party’s revival. The state Congress wants to fight the battle under the leadership of chief minister Nitish Kumar who stands for development.
According to a section of the Congress, Mr Lalu Yadav ensured the Congress remains weak in the state.

But the real issue in this election would be how many seats either Mr Lalu Yadav or Mr Nitish Kumar leave for the Congress. It cannot be beyond 30, they said. The Congress had fought all the seats in the last Assembly polls but remained in single digits.

“The picture of pre-poll alliance may become clear during the Monsoon Session beginning in the third week of next month,” an AICC official said, adding that the state Congress may be in favour of going with the JD(U), NCP and the Left but a final decision about alliances would be taken by the party high command.
