GHMC Civic polls: Candidates can contest elections from only one ward and not more, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, municipal administration and urban development (MAUD), K Surendra Mohan, Hyderabad

Candidates contesting elections to the urban local body polls such as municipal corporations and municipal councils in the state will be barred from contesting from more than one ward from August 9.

The department of municipal administration and urban development (MAUD) has made relevant amendments to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, 2016, (Act No.5 of 2016) which will come into force from Tuesday.

As per the amended Act, a candidate may file nominations from more than one ward in a municipal corporation but has to withdraw nominations from all other wards except one  of his or her choice before the deadline for withdrawal of nominations, failing which, all his/her nominations would become invalid and he/she would not be allowed to contest from any ward.

A notification to this effect will be published in the extraordinary issue of the Telangana Gazette on Tuesday. The state government made amendments to the GHMC Act after the Telangana State Election Commission (TSEC) had written to it asking it to make necessary amendments to the GHMC Act.

GHMC additional commissioner (elections) K Surendra Mohan told Express that candidates in urban local body polls would be allowed to contest elections from only one ward and not more.

Surendra Mohan said that till now candidates, who get elected from two wards in the same poll, had the choice to retain one ward and relinquish the other. “This is leading to compulsory bypoll as the seat becomes vacant after resignation. This will change now,” he added. Conducting a bypoll is time-consuming and requires huge expenditure.
